2005, as a mother with a keen interest in breastfeeding, I was one of the
founding members of the York based breastfeeding support group, Treasure Chest.
I trained as a breastfeeding peer supporter on the first course we commissioned
and I found my spiritual home supporting women in their infant feeding
decisions. Within two years I had trained as a breastfeeding counsellor with the
Association of Breastfeeding Mothers (ABM) which led to time spent volunteering
on the National Breastfeeding helpline. I am able to draw upon extensive years
of personal breastfeeding experience of my children in order to provide women
with sensitive, empathetic care.
I am a practicing midwife where supporting women with breastfeeding is an integral part of my role both in the first few hours after birth and during the stay on the postnatal ward and have supported breastfeeding in the community. My training as a midwife has placed me well in being able to understand and interpret evidence and to provide evidence-based support. I am passionate about oxytocin and how what we do in early life impacts upon the rest of our physical health and wellbeing. When waiting to train as a midwife I worked formally with Professor Mary Renfrew at the York Mother and Infant Research Unit on the Breastfeeding Education Project.
As part of Nurture Natal I have run courses for
aspiring student midwives on breastfeeding for the last 4 years, we also teach
on the microbiome and fetal programming. These have a hugely important overlap
with breastfeeding. In addition, I qualified as a hypnobirthing teacher in 2013
and have taught regular sessions ever since including breastfeeding education. I
have a level 3 certificate in education and training.
