Merchant Adventurers' Hall

Merchant Adventurers' HallThe Medieval Hall of the Company of Merchant Adventurers was built between 1357-1361 and is the finest building of its date and type in Europe.  It provides a highly unusual yet entirely practical setting for banquets, weddings, dinners, luncheons and exhibitions.

The principal room on the first floor is called the Great Hall and the large room beneath it on the ground floor is called the Undercroft. They each have ample space and can accommodate 180 guests.

There are two other rooms, which may be used in conjunction with the larger rooms or as exclusive settings for small parties. The variety of rooms therefore makes the Hall very suitable for a wide range of functions.

The Guildhall

The Guildhall can be found in St Helen's Square, York.  It stands behind the Lord Mayors' Residence, the Mansion House.

A medieval passageway, called the Common Lane, runs from the Guildhall to the river.  It is said that Romans forded the river at this point.

FAIRFAX HOUSEFairfax House

Fairfax House is perhaps the finest 18th century house in the North of England.  It was designed by John Carr of York, and typifies the best of mid-18th-century rococo decoration. Sadly, successive owners had allowed the house to decay to a state of near collapse by the early 1980's, when it was acquired by York Civic Trust with a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Further grants enabled the Trust to restore the house to its former glory, and in October 1984 it was opened by the Duchess of Kent.

Barley Hall

Barley Hall is a unique survival in York, a city of wonderful buildings.  It is a medieval building in the centre of the city, forgotten until a few years ago, concealed as it was under a jumble of run down derelict offices and workshops.  It was excavated in the 1980's, which revealed that under this jumble was a surviving example of a medieval town house.

Barley Hall is a splendid venue for small dinners, receptions, banquets or a wedding, lying as it does in the centre of historic York.

The Great Hall can seat up to 45 for a banquet.  The Great Hall and Chambers upstairs can fit up to about 70 guests for a buffet.  We can recommend all types of menus.
